Now you are ready to buy new carpet, either for a new home or for the one you already have. It can be intimidating to some to buy carpet. It is a choice to be made that will probably last the lifetime of the home or for as long as you are in it. And it is very expensive, depending on what kind you buy and how much coverage you need. You can lose your sanity if you are not a bit educated on buying carpet.
Think about what kind of carpet you want, will it go well with your furniture in that room, or rooms? Are there antiques throughout the home if so consider Oriental or a Persian style carpet, or is it more modern or traditional style, maybe think about a flat carpet? The carpet you choose is sometimes easier to maintain that smooth flooring. Carpets are good for the acoustics; they lessen the noise that may be in the room.
Choosing carpet depends on a few factors. Get precise measurements of the room or rooms to be carpeted. The old adage holds true every time, “Measure twice, cut once” if the wrong measurements are given to the carpet store will be nothing but disaster. And you will have to pay for the unused carpet.
The material the carpet is made of is another good factor to consider. If it has a high pile, low pile, no pile or wool or nylon is some factors to look for. The thickness of the padding will add softness to almost any carpet.
Carpet is good for people that might use a cane or crutches, as the carpet acts as a non slip surface. Hardwood floors are beautiful but maybe not so for people with canes and the like. The colors that carpet comes in today is overwhelming, colors from pale beige to bright green, there is surely one for you. Decide the colors by the walls and or the furniture in the room. What is your favorite color? Can you stand to live with it for twenty years?
The durability of the carpet you have chosen is a good reason to buy it. If it is too thin, it will wear out faster. Consider the stains that might spill on the carpet, the usage, how often will it be walked on. Will it resist mildew, retard the stains, is it color fast, and flame retardant. Write these down so when looking for carpet you can ask the salesperson. Get any and all quotes in writing. Extra costs can up very quickly.
Order the carpet all at once, this guarantees that the color of the carpet will all be the same. It’s like buying yarn for a sweater, different color lots will ruin a sweater, as will the carpet.
Do your homework; shop around at different carpet stores. Deal with carpet stores that you have heard good things about and have been around.
